We're happy to invite you to join us for Apprenticeship Week 2011! There's going to be lots going on both nationally and locally, as we celebrate the talents of apprentices across the UK, and the value of apprenticeships in general. We have lots of activities in the pipeline, and really want to offer you a feeling of what it would be like to be an apprentice, showcasing the benefits of the apprenticeship scheme.

The Skillsbase E-Bus is going round local schools, where we will be around to offer you advice and interactive information about apprenticeships. So if you're nearing the end of your GCSEs and wondering 'what next', come on down for a chat.

Because at Skillsbase we're dedicated to finding you a wide range of exciting apprenticeships, we're also putting on an Employers' Breakfast for local businesses. We already have strong connections with a range of employers from the Staffordshire area and we're going to make sure that even more are aware of the value that apprentices would bring to their company.

We've got lots more events and activities lined up for the week, so keep checking the blog for up-dates!

If you’re about to finish your GCSEs and are looking at ‘what next’, then we would love to invite you to the SPECS career fair taking place at Staffordshire University on the 12th - 13th January 2011. Skillsbase will be there to offer you one-to-one specialist information and advice, and to talk to you about why an apprenticeship might be a smart career choice for you!

The SPECS event gives you the chance to get lots of information about different careers, courses and practical training, so you can make decisions about your future. You'll have the opportunity to ask experts about what they do, as well as what qualifications, experience and skills are needed to do the job or course you are interested in.

Apprenticeships: A Profitable Alternative

It’s no surprise with government cuts, potential university top-up fees and unemployment gloom and doom that other methods of education and employment for the over-16s are soaring in popularity. Whilst universities face cuts and an increase in fees, the government has recently pledged to provide more funding for Apprenticeships, in a bid to increase employment opportunities for young people.

A recent article in the Ashbourne News Telegraph reported that ‘In times of high youth unemployment, apprenticeships, which allow trainees to work alongside experienced staff to gain skills as well as doing day release training in college, are being seen as the smart route into a job.’

Particularly when viewed along with recent impending developments in university top-up fees (universities might shortly be able to charge up to £9000 a year for a three-year degree!) apprenticeships really are an advantageous way forward, offering young people the best of both worlds. The specialist training and guidance of higher education combined with hands-on work experience really helps you get a foot in the door, and Skillsbase offers all the supportive, specialist help you need to make the most of your apprenticeship.

Five Apprentices Take on 'Lord Logan' for Charity

In the style of Lord Alan Sugar’s famed TV show ‘The Apprentice’ five Skillsbase apprentices were challenged to go out and raise as much money as possible for Children in Need in just an hour. The fundraising challenge proved a huge success as the apprentices showed true enterprise and really stepped up to the challenge. The resourceful five rose over £300 for the charity, with an outstanding display of hard-work and creativity.

After a difficult judging session, Stevie Berks, 20, from Kingsley, a Skillsbase ICT apprentice, emerged the winner. ‘Lord Logan’ AKA Graham Logan Skillsbase Director, applauded the apprentices’ outstanding efforts saying, ‘Unlike the squabbling of the TV apprentices, our real apprentices worked productively together to show what talented young people can do to help others in greater need’.

More Opportunities for Staffordshire Apprentices

TEN vacancies have been created for apprentices at prospering Shelton-based firm ARC IT solutions. ARC has teamed up with us over here at Skillsbase, agreeing to provide 20 placements for high-achieving students on relevant courses at Leek College over the next three years, offering the most successful 12-month apprenticeships. The firm has prospered so much that it is moving to new premises to accommodate its new growth.

Director of ARC, Andy Rafferty, said to the Sentinel newspaper, ‘We want to continue our growth by offering opportunities to young people, or those who have been out of work for a long time, or are struggling to get the opportunity to prove themselves’

‘We know the college's training is to a high standard, and, with them on our doorstep, a partnership with them is a no-brainer’.

Skillsbase is thrilled to be working in partnership with ARC IT Solutions, and pleased to be able to offer potential apprentices the advantageous opportunity of being a part of this already successful and expanding company.

Jet-Setting the Trend in Apprenticeships

SKILLSBASE apprentice Anthony Ball has secured a month’s work experience in Germany as part of his apprenticeship with company Pinewood Drapilux. The 19-year-old, who has worked as an administrator in the business for 12 months, will be jetting off to Emsdetten on the German-Dutch border in the New Year, telling the Leek Post and Times ‘I'm looking forward to experiencing a new culture’.

He continued, ‘I didn't fancy university at all because I didn't want to be faced with debts at the start of my career. I think I am very lucky, in today's financial climate, to be working in a job which I enjoy and I would recommend apprenticeships to those leaving school this summer’.

Hopefully Anthony’s high-flying initiative will prompt an increase in overseas opportunities for apprentices.
